Backlit Aspen Leaves

In an effort to get a sharp image of the veins of colorful aspens leaves, I collected a dozen or so leaves in Rock Creek Canyon. I wanted a fall color palette that showed the intricate leaf veins with their fall pigments. (As the cold temperatures of autumn approach, green chlorophyll production slows, and the more stable yellow and orange carotenoid pigments present in the leaves show through. Aspens also produce darker anthocyanin pigments during bright fall days and cool nights that remain above freezing.) To bring out this leaf color and venation, I placed the leaves on a light table and used my sharpest macro lens.

This image is probably most pleasing as a metal print.
