Autumn color in the Eastern Sierra starts in late September in the high country, and progresses down-slope to the valley floors where Fremont cottonwood trees generally take on their best fall hues by late October. In good years (for fall landscape photography) there is snow at the higher elevations in October. Several times I had driven by this tree between my home and Bishop, and when I thought the leaves couldn’t turn any more golden, I decided to head back early the next morning. I was lucky to get some high cirrocumulus clouds, and the low angle helps accentuate the form and fall color of the grasses in the foreground.
