Eastern Sierra Wildflowers with Mt. Tom, Sherwin Hill, CA

Wildflowers from the Mojave Desert, Great Basin Desert, and the Sierra can all be found growing in the Eastern Sierra region. Here desert paintbrush (Castilleja angustifolia), from the Great Basin, takes center stage with phacelias and yellow cryptantha (Cryptantha confertiflora), all from the Mojave, while a snow-covered Mt. Tom looms in the background. This image was made in 1998, an El Niño year that brought record precipitation to California. Sadly, this area is now overrun with the invasive weed, cheat grass, and this sort of wildflower display here is a thing of the past.
